  Around the time Kephart was exploring the Smokies in the early s, much of the Tennessee-North Carolina border was a large field straddling the high ridge. This open field stretched for nearly 24 miles, from Silers Bald to Gregory Bald, in Kephart's day. Modern-day hikers can explore this area by hiking along the Appalachian Trail.   Tennessee makes up miles of the AT. From North Carolina, the AT goes through Doe Knob at miles in. For the next miles, give or take, the AT criss-crosses the two states, ending at Holston Mountain, between Tennessee and Virginia. Highlights Of The AT Near Gatlinburg. Silers Bald is a mountain in the western Great Smoky Mountains, located in the Southeastern United proximity to Clingmans Dome and its location along the Appalachian Trail make it a popular hiking destination. Silers Bald is located on the crest of the Smokies with Thunderhead Mountain to the west and Clingmans Dome to the east.
